ANNUAL FIXTURE TO BE HELD

WAIRIO TROTTING CLUB’S YEAR

A decision to carry on with the annual fixture of the club and to leave the stake money the same as it was last year was made at the annual meeting. of the Wairio Trotting Club. The fixture will be held on December 7. Mi G. W. Gardner presided over an attendance of 20 members.

“The fourth trotting meeting held on December 2 was again a success, in spite of the fact that the war had been in progress some three months,” stated the annual report. “It was feared that the petrol restrictions would interfere with the transport of horses and the attendance, but fortunately the restrictions were lifted during the month of December, and we were thus able to carry on as in former years. Since that time the restriction of petrol has been considerably tightened and it will be for the incoming committee to go into the question of transport during the coming season. The profit on the last meeting was £l2/18/-, a good deal less than for the 1938 .meeting, due to the fact that in 1938 there was an additional attraction in the presence of the Tasmanian pacer Logan Derby. The nominations and acceptances showed a slight increase on the previous year and the racing was well up to the standard of provincial totalizator meetings. The Juvenile Stakes again proved popular with owners and trainers and the field of 10 comprised the best youngsters available in Southland. The number of horses in work locally at the present time is well up to former years. Thanks are due to the Wairio Jockel Club for the free use of its course and appointments and also to the president and officials of-that, club

for the assistance given by them.” A motion of sympathy was passed with two of the foundation members, Messrs S. J. Collie .(Wairio) and R. Sheddon (Nightcaps), who are at present seriously ill. The following officials were elected: President, Mr G. W. Gardner; vicepresidents, Messrs C. Keen, A. J. Brown and D. McColl; treasurer, Mr J. C. Purdue; committee, Messrs G. W. Gardner, C. Keen, J. Hogan, D. McColl, J. A. Steans, J. C. Purdue, J. J. Lynch, A? J. Brown, A. V. Prendeville, B. Rushton, jun., and J. A Beck; secretary, Mr John Egan.
