WOMEN’S DIVISION

CROOKSTON.— The August meeting was held in the hall. There was a good attendance of members. The roll call was, “A recipe for a savoury tea.” Mrs Milligan won the competition, an article made from a sugar bag, and the best bloom competition was won by Mrs V. Fleming. It ,was decided to celebrate the birthday on September 27, with a progressive euchre evening followed by dancing. Miss Fogo, gave an address on “Faults in New Zealand diet.” The Heriot Junior Home Makers were present and Miss Jean Roberts thanked the branch for the invitation to attend the meeting.

HEDGEHOPE.— Mrs Sanderson presided over a good attendance of members at the monthly meeting. Mrs Chapman, of St. John Ambulance Corps, gave an interesting and instructive talk on first aid for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. It was decided to send a donation to the Fighter Plane Fund. A small parcel of knitting was forwarded to the Patriotic Fund to be distributed among the soldiers. A member gnve £1 to buy wool to knit for the soldiers.

FIVE RIVERS.— At a meeting of the Five Rivers branch held in the school Mrs G. Muir, vice-president, presided over a good attendance. It was decided to hold the next meeting on the same evening as the Young Farmers’ Club, the date being September 5. The roll call was, “My favourite book and author.” The competition, potato peeling, resulted:—Mrs Cavanagh 1, Mrs Smith and Mrs Charlston 2 equal. Mrs H. Drummond demonstrated the making of silver paper pictures. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Sutherland and Stewart.

GROVE BUSH.— The branch recently celebrated its fourth birthday with a ball held in the hall. After supper the birthday cake was wheeled in by the youngest member of the branch, Miss R. Warden. The four candles Were then lit by the secretary, Mrs A. Knight, and extinguished by Mrs Horman, the oldest member. Several members of neighbouring branches extended their greetings. Mrs Coveney, the president, thanked all those present for coming along and making it such a successful night. All the proceeds were to be given to the Southland Fighter Aeroplane Fund. The winners of the novelty dances were: Spot, Miss R. Warden and Mr F. Waldron; Monte Carlo, Miss Turnbull and Mr Saunders; statue, Miss Waldron and Mr L. Ross; first on floor, Mr J. Warden and Mrs McCallum. Items were given by Miss Jessie Hodges and Mr J. Doig, while the masters of ceremonies for the dance were Mr J. Warden and Mr L. Ross.
