WINTON NOTES

BOWLING CLUB. DECISION AGAINST NEW GREEN. (From Our Correspondent.) A further general meeting of the Winton Bowling Chib was held on Monday evening. The object of the meeting was to finalize the proposal for a new bowling green on the railway reserve. Mr M. Driscoll presided over an attendance of 15. The secretary stated that he had sent out eleven ballot papers, but so far they had not all been sent in. The result of the voting was as follows: — In favour of proposed new green 14 Against proposed new green .... 17 School Committee. - The monthly meeting of the committee of the Winton District High School was held on Monday evening. Mr H. S. Woodnorth presided, the following members being present: Messrs, J. Gunn, D. Wildey, G. Pearce and F. 'Tilley (secretary). A letter was received from the Women’s Christian Temperance Union asking for the committee’s co-operation for the adoption of the Nelson system of Bible reading in schools. The matter was discussed and the committee decided to,offer no objection to the-adoption of the system. The headmaster's report stated that the roll number for the month of May was 270, the average attendance 246.8 and the percentage 91. Mrs Jane Loft had commenced duties as third assistant, and Miss Packwood, exchange teacher, was relieving as special assistant. The winfer supplies of wood, coal and coke had come to hand and the heating of the school was very satisfactory. During the jubilee celebrations a switch in the office and the school bell had been broken and it was suggested that a new bell be procured. The Jubilee Committee might assist in the matter. Other furniture and apparatus had been .replaced in good order by the Jubilee Committee. In view of the fact that the common drinking cup has been condemned by the school medical officer, it was suggested that another bubble fountain be supplied for the primary department. School Football. School football commenced in the Central District last Friday afternoon. The competition is for the Watson Cup, and some very interesting matches were witnessed. The results are as follows: —Browns 23 v. Hedgehope 0; Limehills 25 v. Convent 3; Winton 32 v. Dipton 3. The draw for next Friday is as follows: Limehills v. Hedgehope at Hedgehope; Dipton v. Convent at Winton; Browns v. Winton at Winton.
