GERMAN REPUBLIC

ARMY’S ALLEGIANCE

AN IMPORTANT STEP TAKEN 1 FIRST TIME SINCE 1918 (United Press Assn.—By Telegraph—Copyright) (Rec. 10.35 p.m.) London, June 3. The Berlin correspondent of the Daily News says that the most important step yet taken to assure the permanence of the German Republic was taken by President Hindenberg, when, almost unnoticed by the public, he decreed a new formulation of the “Articles of War” through which the entire army took the oath of loyalty to the republic.

This is the first time since the revolution in 1918 that the German Army has officially recognized the republic, which previous Articles of War did not mention, the soldier merely being required to swear allegiance to the Fatherland.

Monarchists will thus no longer be able to claim that they can advocate abolition of the republic and still remain loyal to the Fatherland.
