FOREIGN FOODSTUFFS
PROPOSAL TO IMPOSE TAX.
STATEMENT BY MR BALDWIN.
(British Official Wireless.) Rugby, June 1. Speaking at Leeds yesterday, Mr Stanley Baldwin, ex-Prime Minister, made reference to the referendum, which he had stated would be taken in the event of a future Conservative Government proposing to tax foreign foodstuffs in order to give preference to Imperial foodstuffs. He said that a referendum was required so that the voice of the people would not be mistaken, and it would enable the Government to act so that any further Government following would not feel it necessary to cancel any agreement of a fiscal nature that had been entered upon. The McKenna duties had been approved and instituted by the Conservative Government, which had a mandate from the people and a majority of over 200, and he hoped that they would not see a minority Labour Government attempting to sweep it away.
