NEWS OF THE DAY. Children’s Playground. A commencement has been made with improvements to the children’s playground prior to the erection of apparatus, lhe work is being carried out by returned soldiers. * * St * Graded Roads. The necessity for constant grading of the motor roads of Southland is shown by a consignment of grader blades lying in the Customs goods shed at present, lhe consignment consists of between 20 and 30 blades. # * Australian Dried Fruits. A visit to the Customs goods shed usually reveals the fact that Australian dried fruits constitute an important import to the province of Southland,' blit if is probable that few people have noticed that the fruit cases are not a product of Australia. Many of the cases of fruit are adorned with a map of Australia, ‘ but the words “Printed in Sweden” . appear below the design. » * « « Basic Safg Shipments. The men who seek employment in goods shed B, unloading the imports of the province, are having 'a busy time at present handling basic slag for Southland farmers. The foreman of the shed, Mt B. Gorinski, stated yesterday that about 70 men were employed and would be kept in employment for some time, 100,800 bags of basic slag having to be handled from the lon.c. Hororata and Rangitata. * * * » Building Permits. During the month of May 26 building permits of a total value of £8,42(1 were issued by the City Engineer’s office. These comprised nine permits for new dwellings, of a total value of £6,904 and eight permits for other buildings of a total value of £235 10/-. lour permits were issued, for additions and alterations to other buildings amounted Yo £9OB 10/- and in addition three permits were issued lot demolitions.
«** * * South Invercargill Tram Shelter. When Councillor Reed asked at last evening’s meeting of the City Council if anything was being done about a tram shelter at South Invercargill, Councillor Gilkison, chairman of the Trading Committee, stated that the committee had asked Mr Carman for a report on the cost of providing shelters at all stopping places. “I think it would also be instructive,” said Councillor Gilkison, "if the Town Clerk prepared a report showing the cost to the ratepayers of Invercargill of the amalgamation of the southern area. There is a lot of ignorance about the position.” * * * *
A Satisfactory Year. At the annual meeting of the Gore branch of the Plunket Society yesterday afternoon, reference was made to the increased advantage being taken of the facilities which the society provided. The visits made to homes by the nurse in charge were 1669 as compared with 1397 for the previous year, while the number of adults to visit the Rest Rooms was 2,832 as compared with 2,543 for the previous year. A satisfactory increase was also shown in the number of babies taken to the Rest Rooms, 2,588 receiving attention as compared with 2,154 for the previous year.
Footpath Maintenance. The following reference to footpaths appeared- in the City Engineer’s report to the council last evening: Of the sum of £3090 allocated to this work this year I suggest htat £l5OO be reserved for patching of holes, etc. (which must precede tarring) and that the other £l5OO be used in applying a paint coat of tar and sand or grit to the streets set out below, which have been chosen as being those in which such treatment is most urgent: Dee street, North road, Tay street, East road, Esk street, Don street, Spey street, Yarrow, street, Leet street, Gala, street, Kelvin street, Deveron street, Jed street, Doon street, Nith street, Elies road (south end mostly done already), Ythan street, Duke street, Biggar street, Dalrymple road, Forth street. The council decided to adopt the engineer’s recommendations. * * $ ■» King’s Birthday To-day. To-day will be celebrated the birthday of King George V, who was born at Marlborough House on June 3, 1865. He was the second son of the Prince of Wales, afterwards King Edward VII, and his wife Alexandra, but the sudden death of his elder brother, Albert Victor, in 1892, made him heir, after his father, to the throne and curtailed his naval career. On .July 6, 1893, he married Victoria Mary, only daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Teck, in the Chapel Royal, St. James’s. The death of Queen Victoria on January 23, 1901, and his father’s accession to the throne increased his responsibilities. On King Edward’s birthday in 1901, the Duke of Cornwall and York (as George V then was) was created Prince of Wales. King Edward died after a very britjf illness on May 6, 1910, and the Prince ascended the throne as George V. The coronation of King George and Queen Mary in Westminster Abbey took place on June 22, 1911, when the King wore the coronation robes of George IV. The business people in Invercargill will observe a close holiday today in commemoration of the King’s Birthday and the general public will be well catered for in the matter of sports activities. On Queen’s Park local representative hockey players will be matched against visitng teams from Dunedin; a ladies’ seven-a-side hockey tournament will be held at Gore; the Invercargill Gun Club is holding a big match at Wallacetown; the Southland representative Soccer team will meet Otago on the Showgrounds; Rugby enthusiasts will have provided matches at Rugby Park, while (he Southland Motor Cycle Club is holding a reliability trial.
