FORESTERS’ LODGE

MEMORIAL PRIZE PRESENTED. FUNCTION AT GORE. There was a very good attendance of members and friends of the Gore Foresters’ Lodges at a meeting the other evening when the District Secretary, Bro. J. K. Maefie, presented Bro. Eric R. Steel with the books won by him for the. James Maefie memorial scholarship prize. There were also present Messrs J. Hunter, Rector of the Gore High School, and Mr J. Columb, representing the Gore Convent. In welcoming the visitors, Sister Gray, C.R. of the Court of Pride of Gore, expressed pleasure at the splendid attendance. A welcome was also extended to Bro. Newman on behalf of the Court Pride of Gore. The speaker outlined the conditions attached to the prize, and remarked that he hoped some other member would strive to win it. He also welcomed the district secretary to Gore. In welcoming the visitors on behalf of the Juvenile Lodge, Bro. P. Atkinson expressed pleasure that a member of the Court Star of Gore had won the very handsome memorial prize. He hoped it would prove an incentive to other members to better the effort of this year’s winner. Bro. J. K. Maefie, District Secretary, presented the prize to Bro. E. R. Steel. He remarked that the prize was in memory of his father, P.D.C.R. Bro. James Maefie, late District Secretary for the W.0.D.A.0.F., who was for over 40 years an officer of the District Executive. It was just a fortnight ago that the winner for Otago, Miss Nancy Hay, had been presented with her prize. This was the first occasion on which a Gore member had won the prize and he hoped it would be the forerunner of other successes. The prize was won by the Forester, or child of a Forester,, who gained the highest marks in the Junior National Scholaship in the Southland Education District. Bro. Maefie then presented Bro. Steel with a set of books. Bro. Steel suitably responded. Mr. J. Hunter, Rector of the Gore High School, expressed his thanks for the privilege extended to him of selecting thq> books. Thanks were also extended by Mr. J. Columb, on behalf of the Sisters of the Convent School, and by Mr. F. Whitty, president of the Court Star of Gore.
