LUMSDEN NOTES

RUGBY FOOTBALL.

(Fom Our Correspondent.)

The second round of the football competition in the Northern District commenced on Saturday in fine weather. The Lumsden senior team met Balfour at the Lumsden recreation grounds and after an interesting match succeeded in defeating the visitors by 14 points to 3. For Lumsden tries were scored by Richards (2), U. Crosbie and W. Wellman. One of the tries was converted by D. Ogilvy. The Balfour players gave the shield holders a good game and the match was the best witnessed this season. The forwards were evenly matched, but the visitors packed better and secured more ball from the scrums. One serious fault with the Lumsden forwards is that _ they will not pack and more practice in this department of the game will be necessary if the club is going to hold the shield for cnother season. The backs on the Lumsden side played well. The display of the fullback, D. Ogilvy was watched with interest. He must have been overlooked by the Northern District selectors when the fullback position for the district team was filled. Johnson, the home half-back, received an injury to his shoulder which will probably put him out of the game for Country Day. In the forwards Brian Sims was noticeable for good work in the. tight and this player deserves to be considered for the team to defend the Trust Cup. Tomlin, who has represented Northern for some seasons, but who was dropped this year, was on his game, and in the writer’s opinion he is still one of the best forwards in the Northern District. J. Muir played well in the Balfour backs, and showed that he was up to last year’s form. Fraser, the Northern District five-eighth, gave a good display and should combine well with Crosbie and Wellman. There are several players in the Balfour Club who are worthy of consideration for district representative honours and who will probably gain a place in the team for the next representative match which will be against West Otago during nejri month. The Waikaia senior team travelled to Athol on Saturday to play Country Pirates and were defeated by 30 points to 3. The visitors were not at full strength. Mr. A. Earl was referee. The match at Lumsden was refereed by Mr. O. Taylor. The Northern District Sub-Union has decided to hold three rounds this season. The reasons set forth are that the competition for the clubs is usually finished too early in the season, and that too much attention has been paid to representative games. It is also hoped that by prolonging the club competition the representative players will have a better chance of keeping fit. However, travelling is the drawback in the country districts. The Waikaia and Country Pirates players have to travel a distance of 50 miles to fulfil their annual home v. home matches. Towards the end of the season players are not keen to travel long distances for club matches. The sub-union is trying the experiment this year and is bound to receive the hearty support of all clubs in the district. An endeavour is to be made to form a referees’ association in the district and. it is hoped that at an early date a meeting will be held when a general discussion on rules will take place. The following is the position of the teams in the senior competition for the Bedford Competition Shield.

The results of Saturday’s junior matches make the second grade competition an interesting one. Lumsden suffered defeat at the hands of Waikaia and Country Pirates were defeated by Balfour. Four rounds will be played in the competition. The final match of the second round will be played on Saturday. The position of the teams is as follows: —

It is now twelve months ago since the school jubilee celebrations were successfully held. At the final meeting held after the celebrations a sum of about £lO was in hand and it was decided to hold this amount until a meeting of the Ex-Pupils’ Association was held during the present year. It was hoped that the Ex-Pupils’ Association would continue to function and that an annual reunion would be held. A meeting of ex-pupils will be held during the present month to decide matters and if sufficient support is forthcoming an election of office-bearers will take place and arrangements will be made for the annual function.
