MATAURA NOTES

ORCHESTRAL CONCERT. (From Our Correspondent. The Mataura Orchestral Society’s second concert for the current season was held in the Horticultural Hall on Friday and was well patronized, by members and the general public. Under the capable conductorship of Mr. 0. E. Hubener, the society has shown marked progress and for its first number gave “Court Royal” (Gruenwald), the overture opening evenly, with brass, wood-wind and strings, being heard to advantage. Although slight unevenness was manifest on occasions, the balance was fairly well maintained, and the interpretation was very well received. The most difficult selection "From a Russian Village” (Marsden) fully taxed the accomplishments of the combination. Opening nicely with brass and wood-wind, the air was developed by the full orchestra, and, taken right through,

the interpretation was practically faultless. “Carmen” (Bizet) was a nice number which was perhaps the most acceptable of the evening. It was cleanly interpretated and the audience was not slow to show its appreciation. During the concluding portion of the entertainment the orchestra made two further appearances when the overture “Fra Diavolo” (Auber) and the waltz, “Echoes of Vienna Woods” were both pleasing numbers. The first of the soloists was Miss E. Hinchey who is well and favourably known to Mataura audiences and her singing of “June is Calling” earned instant approval and she responded to an encore with “Fairy Tales of Ireland” (Cohtes). At a later stage both''Misses E. and F. Hinchey provided a most enjoyable duet ‘Tarewell to Summer” (Johnson), which was well received, and in response to popular demand they sang “0 Wert Thou in the Cauld Blast” (Mendelssohn). For their concluding number the Misses Hinchey presented “Arise o Sun” (Maude Caske Day), and as an encore “April is afoot” (Phillips). Ever

popular with Mataura audiences, Mr. Archie Jones was in excellent voice for his first number, “Angels Guard Thee” (Godard) and in response to insistent recalls he gave “The Yoeinan’s Wedding” (Prince Poniatowski) and “Bird Song at Eventide.” His final bracketed items, “Thanks to My Brethern,” and "How Vain is Man” were productive of a double encore his response being “Just Because the Violets” (Russell), and .“The Star 1 ’ (Rogers). Miss 'N. Mackay whose accomplishments as a violinist are widely known charmed her auditors with her interpretation of “Melody” (Dawson-Kreisler), and as a recall she gave “Liebesfred” (Kreisler). Women's Division. The Mataura branch of the Women’s Division of the N.Z. Farmers Union held a very successful sale of cakes and produce in the Bandroom on Thursday last. Good business was done during the afternoon and the sum of £6 7/6 was netted as a result in aid of the funds of the Division.

Personal. Mr. R. H. L. Thomas, Dunedin, who has been appointed successor to Mr. Martin Maley (retired) as chief porter at Mataura Railway Station has commenced duties. Oddfellows Lodge. P. G., Bro. G. Cameron presided over probably one of the largest and most enthusiastic gatherings of Oddfellows on the occasion of the bi-weekly meeting of the Manchester Unity Lodge. Routine business occupied a considerable portion of the evening and the secretaries of the forthcoming dance reported that the arrangements were well in hand. New members were initiated into the order after which the lodge closed down.
