WEATHER RETURNS

MONTH OF MAY. COLD WINTRY CONDITIONS. On the whole the month of May just closed was cold and wintry, the fine weather experienced during the first week or so being entirely offset by the unfavourable conditions prevailing during the remainder of the month. The total rainfall recorded was . exactly five'inches which, when compared with the normal average for May, 4.35 inches, shows an excess of .65 inches. One or two severe south-west storms were experienced, a particularly heavy one extending from the 21st to the end of the month. This was accompanied by very weather, hail, sleet and thunderstorms. Perhaps an unusual feature for a May month was that there were, no frosts to any great extent. As if to make up for that shortcoming, however, there was an excessive rainfall with a large number of wet days and wintry weather generally. The detailed returns for the month, as supplied by Mr J. L. Lennie, are as follows:—
