Hamilton) arrived at Bluff at 10.10 a.m. on Saturday from Halfmoon Bay with passengers, mails and cargo. She returned again at 2.40 p.m. Cable advice received states that the Otaki, which left Bluff on April 7 for Manchester and Glasgow, via Montevideo and Rio de Janeiro, arrived at Manchester on May 27. The Union Company’s chartered tanker Frank G. Drum left San Pedro on Tuesday with a full cargo of fuel oil for Wellington, where she is due on June 21. The motor ship Weirbank, which left Antofagasta, Chile, on May 16 for Auckland and Australian ports, has a cargo of 7,800 tons of nitrates, which is stated to be the biggest cargo of nitrates yet dispatched from the West Coast of South America to New Zealand and Australia. The Weirbank is due at Auckland about Monday next. Before the weekend the New Zealand Shipping Company received a further wireless message from the Turakina in ballast from Glasgow, reporting that she was experiencing heavy weather and was expected to reach Oamaru on Saturday to commence her Homeward loading. The Union Company’s Kairanga, which arrived at "Wellington last Monday night from Port Kembla and Sydney, brought transhipments ex the Caprera, Ceptree, Orford, Tancred, Port Said, Maru, Nieuw Zeeland, Chinkoa, Orsova, Changte, Talleyrand, Aki Maru, Chitral, Lippe, Westralia, Mooltan, Ormiston, Leverkusen, Bendigo, Kawarra, and Time. Owing to to-morrow being a holiday, the departure of the R.M.S. Tahiti from Wei-
lington for Sydney has been postponed until 4 p.m. on Wednesday. The Tahiti is expected at Wellington this morning from San Francisco. The Shaw, Savill liner Mataroa arrived at Wellington last Tuesday morning from Lyttelton to complete her Homeward loading. She sailed finally from Wellington on Saturday for Southampton and London, via the Panama canal. In order -to enable the Maori and Wahine to undergo their annual overhaul and survey, the Marama will relieve both vessels in the Lyttelton ferry service. The Marama left Sydney on Thursday for Wellington, instead of Friday, and is due at the northern port this morning. She will leave Wellington to-morrow for Lyttelton, and will leave there on the following night in place of the Maori. The Maori will relieve the Wahine at Lyttelton on June 10. Dutr at' Port Chalmers from London, via Suva, on June 17, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line steamer Port Pirie will unload her general merchandise cargo at Port Chalmers, Lyttelton, and Timaru. After completion of discharge she is to load New Zealand produce for London at Oamaru, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Auckland, Napier, and Wellington. She is to sail from Wellington for London on July 19. Advice from Suva states that the Burns, Philip (South Seas) Company, Ltd., auxiliary schooner Motau was wrecked off Bua Island, Vanua Levu. There was no loss of life. The Motau was, 235 tons gross, and 166 tons net, and was built in 1917 by W. F. Stone, of Oakland, California, and was registered in Sydney. The vessel was engaged in the company's service between the various South Sea Islands. The arrival of the Shaw, Savill motor ship Zealandic at London on Wednesday was of more than passing interest to the mercantile marine. The vessel sailed direct for Panama and London "at dawn on April 25 from Port Chulmere, with a full loud of wool, fruit, and produce. There .was friendly rivalry with the Rangitiki, which was sailing from Wellington for Southampton on the following morning. It,
was a keen race home. The ships arrived at Panamh on the same day, but on the run across the Atlantic the Zealandic gained a day on the New Zealand Shipping Company’s liner. At Dunedin the Federal Line, of steamers from west coast ports of Great Britain and also the A. and A. Line agency from New York have been transferred to the New Zealand Shipping Company, which will handle the two lines from to-day. Mr. F. Tyson will be the manager for the lines.
The Government motor ship Maui Pomare was delayed in the stream at Auckland for nearly two hours last Sunday morning for minor repairs to her engines (says the New Zealand Herald). The vessel arrived from Apia and Niui Island at midnight on Saturday night, and was medically examined on Sunday morning. After pratique had been granted she had to remain at the anchorage until repairs to the machinery were completed. She then moved to her. berth at King’s wharf under her own power and with a launch towing ahead to assist in berthing operations. The opinion that New Zealand boys have little chance at present of qualifying for the merchant service and that a training ship should be provided, so that those who wanted to go to sea would be able to receive adequate instruction, was expressed at a meeting at Timaru of the general committee of the Navy League. A member had heard it said from Lyttelton that scarcely one boy a year took up a seafaring life as an occupation. In other countries there were training ships, and in England some shipping companies had their own methods of fitting boys for future service on their boats, by means of cadetships on cargo steamers. New Zealand, however, lacked any such training ground. The colliers Kaiwarra and Kawatiri, which have been laid up at Port Chalmers for several months, are. about to resume running as the result of the lifting of the coal deadlock in Australia. The Kaiwarra was docked on Saturday, and the Kawatiri will go into dock this week. MIRRABOOKA COMING. The Swedish motor ship Mirrabooka is scheduled to leave Stockholm on Friday next, Gothenburg on June 10, and Oslo on June 13 for Bluff and Australian ports. She is expected to reach Bluff about the end of July. POOLTA DELAYED. The Union Company’s steamer Poolta which left Wellington on Thursday evening for Dunedin, was delayed by heavy southerly weather and in consequence did not arrive at Dunedin until yesterday. It. is hoped to despatch her to-day for Bluff direct where she is now due to-morrow to discharge general cargo from Port Stephens and Newcastle. Upon completing operations she will proceed to Greymouth. WETERE’S ROUGH TRIP. The oyster steamer Weterc (Captain W. B. Dixon) arrived at Bluff at 2.40 p.m. on Saturday from the South Cape mutton-bird islands via Colac Bay. Sailing from Bluff at 7 a.m. on Wednesday last she arrived at Easy Cove at 2 p.m., making the passage in a westerly gale. Captain Dixon reports the voyage to be one of the worst in his experience of over 30 years. On the weather moderating, the Wetere took off a number of Colac Bay and Bluff ’birders. The Wetere will sail again at the first opportunity for another cargo of muttonbirders from the South Cape islands. RANGITATA DUE THIS MORNING. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s motor liner Rangitata which sailed from Auckland on Thursday for Bluff direct, arrived off the heads yesterday morning but the rough weather conditions prevented her from berthing. She sheltered at Stewart Island during the night and is expected to berth at six o’clock this morning to complete discharge of her London cargo and to continue loading. It is hoped to despatch her on Wednesday for Port Chalmers, Lyttelton and Wellington. Captain J. L. B. Hunter retains command, and his officers are: Chief, Mr. T. L. Maltby; second, Mr. L. Griffiths; third, Mr. G. Dibley; fourth, Mr. C. L. Doughterty; surgeon, Dr A. W. Comber; chief engineer, Mr. A. M. liarclay; second engineer, Mr. M. Bearpark; third engineer, Mr. R. C. Y'bungs; fourth engineer, Mr. W. H. Scott; chief refrigerating engineer, Mr. C. C. W. Brown; first wireless operator, Mr. C. E. Terry; steward-in-charge, Mr. P. S. Bowen. To enable the general public to see this modern liner with its luxurious accommodation, the Rangitata will be thrown open for inspection to-morrow from 10 a.m. to noon and from 2.30 to 5.30 To-day and on Wednesday she will be open only in the afternoon from 2.30 to 5.30 p.m. in order to enable discharging land loading operations to be carried out.
