WORLD’S TITLE PHELPS BEATS BARRY AN EASY VICTORY (United Press Assn. —By Telegraph—Copyright.) (Rec. 5.5 p.m.) London, May 31. For the world’s sculling championship, Ted Phelps easily defeated J. Barry by a distance. There was intense interest in what proved to be a one sided contest, and crowds lined both sides of the Thames. ■ Ted Phelps, who helped to train Pearce for the Olympic Games, won the championship in 28 minutes 5 seconds. He was leading nearly all the way. He is a son of the well-known sculler, Bossy Phelps. There was a following wind and smooth river. Barry showed signs of distress at Devonshire Meadows, the accompanying launches slackening speed in order to keep behind him. Phelps was 15 lengths ahead at the Chiswick steps and 20 at Barnes bridge, finishing 23 ahead. HISTORY OF CONTESTS RECORD SINCE YEAR 1876.
