BASKETBALL

SATURDAY’S GAMES.

BLUFF DEFEATS RATA.

The second round of the Saturday competition was continued at the Waihopai courts in good weather. The match which attracted most attention from the spectitorswas that between Bluff and Rata, the former team winning by a comfortable margin. The following are the results of the matches;—

SENIOR.

BLUFF (21) v. RATA (10).

During the first spell this game was evenly contested, but a few minutes after the beginning of the second half Bluff controlled the play and without difficulty they compiled a large number of points. From the first throw the ball went to the Bluff goal, but G. Basstian (Rata) intercepted a pass between two Bluff forwards and passed to J. Hinchey, who passed to the centre. G. Burtenshaw (Bluff) obtained the ball in the centre, and returned it to the goal third, where L. Te Koeti secured and passed to P. Calder, who scored, Rata goal third was the centre of play after the next centre throw, but C. Wiig, I. Wiig and I. Gilson, Bluff defenders, combined well to prevent the forwards from scoring, and were able to return the ball to the centre, where C. Fowler obtained and passed to goal, L. Te Koeti scoring. E. Albertson scored for Bluff from the next centre throw. Bluff 3, Rata 0. Rata centres had charge of the ball from the next throw, and by quick passing movements they sent it to their goal third where M. McCurdy scored. Bluff, however, again took possession in the centre and passed to the forward third, where E. Albertson scored. E. McCurdy, immediately afterwards, scored for Rata. Bluff were at this stage responsible for some good open passing movements, one resulting in a good score by P. Calder. Rata controlled the play after this goal, and several times sent the ball to their goal, but Bluff defenders were intercepting well and allowed Rata forwards little chance of scoring. M. McCurdy, however, caught the ball from a quick pass from M. Rodger, and was able to score. Good passing on the part of the Bluff centres and forwards was responsible for two more goals, one by E. Albertson and one by L. Te Koeti. M. McCurdy scored again for Rata and another passing movement to the Rata shooting third was spoiled by I. Wiig, who passed to C. Wiig, that player passing to the centre. M. Royds intercepted a pass between G. Burtenshaw and C. Fowler, Bluff’s centres, and passed to M. Basstian, who passed to goal, M. McCurdy scoring. Bluff 8, Rata 4. For the remaining few minutes of the spell Rata had the best of the game, their forwards scoring three goals to Bluff’s one, and making the half-time score: Bluff 9, Rata 7. During the first few minutes of play in the second half Rata were the superior team and were able to secure two goals, thus evening the score. The play of the Bluff team brightened and with excellent passing and catching and accurate shooting in the forward third, the players were able to make the score 15-9 in their favour. M. McCurdy scored for Rata and it seemed for a time that the team might considerably increase their number of points, but Bluff again played a vigorous attacking game and in spite of good Rata defence, scored six more goals before the final whistle. Mr N. R. Hamilton controlled the game.

MAKAREWA (25) v. ST. PETER’S (8). St. Peter’s were no match for Makarewa, and the game, in consequence, was rather lacking in interest. St. Peter’s were not disheartened by Makarewa’s large score, and the team worked hard (o send the ball to their forward third. The half-time score was 12-3 in Makarewa’s favour. Miss Strathern refereed. COLLEGIATE (28) v. ST. MARY’S (7). Collegiate had little difficulty in defeating St. Mary’s, but St ( . Mary’s could have done much to even the score, if they had played with interest until the end of the match, instead of slackening off perceptibily towards the second half. Mr Kinross refereed. INTERMEDIATE. MAKAREWA (20) v. BLUFF (15). Bluff showed marked improvement in this their third match in the competition and are to be congratulated upon the game with the premier intermediate team. Bluff shoots are accurate and even against strong defenders were able to score fairly consistently. With superior combination Makarewa sent the ball more frequently to their goal. The half-time score was 10-6 in favour of Makarewa. Miss Strathern was referee. COLLEGIATE (17) v. RATA (9). Collegiate had much the better of the first half of the game, when their shoots were scoring well, and Rata shoots missed many opportunities at goal. In the second spell Rata improved considerably and their scoring was almost even with that of Collegiate. Mr Kinross refereed. KIWI (10) v. ST. PETER’S (4). Kiwi centres played with a better combination than that of St. Peter’s centre players, and their shoots were, in consequence, given more opportunities of scoring. The half-time score was 6-3 in Kiwi’s favour. Mr Hamilton was referee. THIS WEEK’S MATCHES. Wednesday, June 4.—Senior: At 2.45 ■p.m. Rata v. St. Mary’s (Mr Cutt) ; at 3.15 Collegiate v.
