Mr and Mrs R. W. Coupland returned to Invercargill on Thursday evening.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Southland Education Board leave of absence was granted Mr Hugh Smith during his visit'to England.
A Wellington Press Association telegram states that the late Mr M. J. Kilgour, a retired civil servant, Bequeathed £lOO for the purchase of a piece of statuary to adorn the Botanical Gardens.
Mr H. Kennedy Black, F.T.C.L, L.A.8., has been appointed by the Board of Governors of the Southland Boys’ High School to the position of singing master and took up his duties yesterday. The staff of A. & T. Burt (Ltd.) held a sales convention on Wednesday evening, May 14, when Mr T. Ross Burt, traced the history of the firm since its establishment in 1862. Members of the staff and friends were afterwards the guests of Mr T. Ross Burt at supper. Those present were, Mesdames Peterson, Rabbage, Glarke, Misses Mahoney, Clark. Stone, Hunter, Mackenzie, Messrs N. W. Torrance, Shuttleworth, Anderson, Braxton, Voyce, Whyte, Motion, Holden, Clark, Peterson,„ Christie, Marshall, Knuckey.
A minute of appreciation of the loyal and efficient service rendered by Mr D. M. Greig during a period of 38 years in the board’s employment was carried at yesmeeting of the Southland Education Board. Mr Greig, who retires from the headmastership of the Waihopai School at the end of next month, was an assistant at Gore from 1891 to 1896, was head teacher at Arrow from 1896 to 1900 and was head teacher at Waikiwi from 1901 to 1927 when he was appointed headmaster at Waihopai. Both the chairman of the Board (Mr A. W. Jones) and the senior inspector (Mr W. A. Service) paid tributes to Mr Greig’s efficiency.
