VALEDICTORY
FAREWELL AT WAIKAKA. Despite the very inclement weather on Friday evening, May 23, the Oddfellows Hall at Waikaka was filled, the occasion being a farewell social tendered to Mies Green, who is leaving the district to take up an appointment at the Roslyn Bush School. The first part of the proceedings took the form of a short concert, the efforts of all performers being much appreciated. At the conclusion of the programme Mr T. Keating (chairman) asked Miss Green To take a place on the platform. In the course of his remarks Mr Keating referred to Mns Green's long residence in the district to which she came with her parents when only a few years of age. At the close of her school days she commenced teaching first at the local school and then for a short time at , Gore. She was appointed sole teacher at North Chatton six years ago, which position she held until her appointment to Roslyn Bush. Miss Green would be very much missed in the social life of the township, as she was always willing to do her best for anything pertaining to the welfare of the district. In asking her acceptance of a solid leather suitcase (initialled) on behalf of those present he wished her health and happiness in the future and advancement in her profession. On behalf of the Tennis Club Mr Payne (president) expressed regret at lasing such an efficient secretary as Miss Green had been. She had held fhe position for about seven years and although not a playing member the present financial position of the club was due chiefly to her efforts. To show the club’s appreciation he had much pleasure in handing Miss Green a travelling rug on behalf of the members.
Mrs Gutschlag, while congratulating Miss Green on her appointment, regretted her departure but wished her every success. Nothing was too great or too little for her to do. She was also treasurer for the local branch of the Women’s Institute and the branch wished her every success. Mr H. Rankin, on behalf of the young people, said that all regretted their guest’s departure and wished her every success in her new position. Mr James Curran, speaking also on behalf of the young people, said Miss Green had been a live spark in the social activities of the district and all ware sorry to know she was leaving, but he conveyed their best wishes for her future. Mrs L. Turnbull also added her meed of praise and said that should their guest ever come back to Waikaka she would receive a royal welcome. Mr C. Green returned thanks on behalf of his daughter. Musical honours were then accorded the guest of the evening. The floor was cleared for dancing, the music for which was supplied by Wallis’s Orchestra (Gore). Mr H.
