RIVERSDALE NOTES.

(From Our Correspondent.)

A general meeting of the sporting bodies of Riversdale was held in the new pavilion on Thursday evening when there was a fair attendance despite the adverse weather conditions. J. Qualter was appointed to the chair and called on Mr J. C. Macpherson to make an explanation of the position in regard to the recreation ground. In the course of his explanation Mr Macpherson stated that at last they were the proud possessors of a beautifully situated recreation ground on which was erected a very modern pavilion. The total indebtedness was approaching £lOO which was received from the Bank of New Zealand by way of overdraft, several district farmers and business people becoming guarantors for the account. This amount, together with the working up of the ground, levelling and re-sowing, was to be met and it would be necessary to consider ways and means with that object in view.

It was decided that fortnightly progressive euchre tournaments be held commencing on Monday week. The following management committee was then elected: Mr J. Qualter, president; committee, Messrs W. J. Kelly, J. C. Macpherson, T. Campbell, L. Gee, F. Shallard, L. Guyton, and E. Kingsbury with Mr J. Kelly as secretary. The incoming committee was recommended to fix the charge for the use of the pavilion at 5/- for evening meetings and 3/- for daylight meetings.

Hall Committaa. The annual meeting of householders interested in the Drill Hail was held on Thursday evening. Mr L. Gee presided. Mr Gee presented his annual report and balance sheet as follows: “Starting the year with a credit balance of £22 6/2 and after paying accounts to the extent of £69 1/6 the year’s operations closed with a credit balance of £4O 2/2. The biggest item of expenditure was £29 4/-, being the purchase price of one dosen new seats. However, the committee considers this money well spent. The committee will have to consider the ad visibility of placing a certain amount of the credit balance aside as a sinking fund for the purchase of a new piano as- has been the custom in the past years. The revenue was comprised of rents £B6 17/6, in connection with which the committee draws attention to the fad that there is a shrinkage from the previous year of some £lB. The committee would recommend to the incoming committee the advisability of considering still further improvements to the hall with the object of making it the bent country halt in Southland.” . . , , , The outgoing committee, with the addition of Mr H. Green to fill the vacancy caused by the demise of Mr J. D. McMath. was re-elected. The works committee was reelected with power to attend to any repairs and improvement®.

In spite of the inclemency of the weather there was a very good attendance. Mr T. Campbell presided and introduced Messrs J. Spdden and H. Johnstone, of Gore, to address the meeting. Mr Speden confined his remarks mainly to the formation and running of a Garden Club. He also gave some useful hints on finding soils suitable for different plants and shrubs. In conclusion he congratulated the Riversdale residents on behalf of the Gore Garden Club on their having formed a club. Mr Johnston gave an address on the cultivation of roses, going into details regarding the most interesting subject and ending with a list of the better types of roses to cultivate. Mr Campbell thanked the speakers, who then answered questions regarding the cultivation of different plants, after which Mr J. C. Macpherson moved a hearty vote of thanks to the speakers. The Riversdale Draughts Club met on Tuesday night, but owing to the inclemency of the weather there was a very poor attendance, only two or three games being played. _____
