SOUTHERN DISTRICT HOCKEY.

The hockey matches played on Saturday, May 24, were keenly contested although the grounds were very heavy as the result of rain during the week. The Tokanui team again came 'through without a defeat. Waikawa, the present shield holders, were defeated by Otara after a very interesting game, while Waimahaka again demonstrated their superiority over Gorge Road, though Gorge Road played their best game to date. During this game Miss M. Patterson, the Gorge Road full-back, received a bad smack on the head from a rising ball, rendering her unconscious. She was immediately conveyed to Mr Templeton’s residence and given at tention, but did not regain consciousness till mid-day on Sunday. The Tokanui team playing Fortrose at Tokanui played a very sound game, beating Fortrose by four goals to nil. For the winners goals were shot by Misses O’Hagen (2), B. Urquhart (1) and E. Crosbie (1). Mr A. Milne controlled the game.

Otara, playing Waikawa on the latter’s ground, defeated the shield-holders by three goals to one. This was a very interesting game, the half-time score being one all. For the winners goals were shot by E. Blair, Gwen Blair, Grace Blair. Waikawa’s goal was scored by Miss H. Voice. Mr Haldane was referee.

The Gorge Road team travelled to Waimahaka and though beaten played their best game to date. Waimahaka won by six goals to two. For the winners Miss Fallow shot four goals, N. Crighton one and W. Fallow one. For Gorge Road the Misses Stewart and Buchanan scored one each. Mr R. A. Cox controlled the game. A meeting of the executive of the Southern Ladies’ Hockey Association at Fortrose on Monday evening was attended by Messrs H. Knowles, R. A. Cox, K. Golden, A. Downie, W. Thwaites and H. Golden (secretary). It was decided to run a seven-a-side tournament at Fortrose on July 5, conditions to be the same as last year. Entries does with the secretary on June 25, and an entry fee of 10/6 per team was fixed. Rugby Football. The management committee of the Southern District Rugby Sub-Union met at Fortrose on Monday evening. The president, Mr J. T. Lewis, presided over the following: Messrs D. Frazer, C. Casey, C. Carlow, D. Stirling, W. Anderson, A. McCallum, A. McEwan, and R. A. Cox (secretary). W. D. Blackie applied for a transfer wh;ch was referred back to the Waimahaka Club. The Waimahaka Club had considered same and gave him his clearance to play for Tokanui. Mr R. A. Cox was appointed manager for the team on Country Day.

A letter was read from the Waimahaka Club protesting against the ruling of the referee in their match against Fortrose on May 10 in regard to charging a kick following a mark. A deputation from the Waimahaka Club, Messrs R. Walsh and H. Knowles, attended the meeting and gave their version of what happened. A player had taken a mark and when taking his kick was charged down, the ball being knocked out of the player’s hands. It went over the goal line and was forced and a try awarded. Mr Anderson, who refereed the match, was also present and said he considered his ruling was correct. After considerable discussion the meeting decided to obtain a ruling from the Southland Referees’ Association and hold the dispute over until word was received from it.

The meeting decided to cancel all club fixtures on June 21, the date of the Test match at Dunedin. The fixtures for May 31 are: Waimahaka and Otara at Waimahaka; Tokanui and Fortrqse at Fortrose. The fixtures for third round are as follows:— June 14. —Tokanui and Waimahaka at Tokanui; Otara and Fortrose at Otara. June 28.—Otara and Waimahaka at Otara; Fortrose and Tokanui at Tokanui. July 5. —Fortrose and Waimahaka at Waimahaka; Otara and Tokanui at Tokanui.
