In connection with the Gardner Shield the chairman said the trophy had been given for the most improved team, and it had been awarded on the percentage of gain between the first and second rounds. The year before last two teams had tied and last year three teams had been in the running for the shield, and it was impossible to make an award. He also mentioned that the Thornbury Club had done remarkably well in the competition last year. Mr C. Gardner, the donor, who was present by invitation, said he had no suggestions to put forward, but considered the various clubs should have a vote when teams tied. He was in favour of giving the trophy to the team showing general improvement over the whole season. He would also consider giving it to the runner-up in the competition. The idea was to encourage younger players, but it was hard to make the award fairly. On the motion of Mr Sorenson and Mrs Laidlaw it was decided, with Mr Gardner’s consent, that the shield be awarded to the runners-up in the competition.
