Mr J. Page returned from Dunedin by yesterday afternoon’s express. Dr Rosa Collier returned to Invercargill from the north yesterday afternoon. Mr W. Stevenson was a passenger from. Dunedin by the mid-day express -'esterday. Mr A. E. Hefford. Chief Inspector of Fisheries, is on a brief visit to Southland. Miss Eileen Mclntyre, at present sole teacher at the Ermedale School, has been appointed assistant at the Waimatua School. Mr and Mrs D. S. McNaughton, of Little River, Canterbury, who have been visiting Gore, left for the north by Sunday evening's express. Mr and Mrs W. L. Stewart, who have been staying with Mr and Mrs W. J. Smith, Gore, returned to Waimatuku on Saturday*. \
Under the will of the late Mr John Terence Condon, of Auckland, bequests totalling over £6OO are made to various Roman Catholic institutions in Auckland. —- Press Association message.
The death has occurred of 'Mr Moss Ballin, aged 44, a surgeon dentist, well known in New Zealand boxing and athletic circles. He came from Auckland in 1919 (states a Christchurch Press, telegram).
Reference to the death of Mr A. H. Stock, a fife member of the Southland Acclimatization Society, was made at the annual meeting of the society last evening and a minute of appreciation of his services was carried.
Dr 11. H. Allan, botanist at the plant research station, has been invited to attend the fifth instructional botanical congress, which will be opened at Cambridge, England, in August. It is not certain yet (says a Press Association telegram from Palmerston North) whether he will be able to attend. Dr Allan was elected president of the botanical section at the meeting in Brisbane of the Australasian Association for the Advancement of Science.
"We much regret having to record the death recently of Mr Joseph G. Harkness, who was for a long period of years prominently connected with the industry,” states the annual report of the South Island Dairy Association. “Mr Harkness was, until his retirement from the position nine years ago, for 18 years secretary to the National Dairy Association, prior to which he was for many years its president. He was also intimately* connected with the New Zealand Producers’ Marketing Association, and various other bodies, and his thorough knowledge of and practical acquaintance with every branch of the dairying industry made his services and advice of very great value. By his death the industry has sustained a decided loss.”
