BALFOUR NOTES
A meeting of the School Committee was held on Tuesday night, Mr A. Rasmussen presiding. A letter from Mr Butel was read to the effect that he would screen pictures on June 17 in aid of the school funds. A letter was also read from the Education Board granting £lO towards improvements to the grounds, and £2 10/- per chain towards clearing the grounds and the erection of a new fence, also regretting that it could not grant a probationer. As a result of the visit of the commission of board members concerning centralizing the small schools in this district, a public meeting is to be called in connection with the matter, when members of the board will address the householders interested. The secretary was instructed to write and ascertain what date will be most suitable for the members to be present, and also to bring under their notice the neceessity of putting a door on the coalshed when the board’s carpenters are in the district making improvements. Miss Walsh’s tender for cleaning the school was accepted. At the monthly meeting of the W.C.T.U. Mrs. A. McDonald presided over a fair attendance. Miss Robertson, of the Gore branch, gave a very interesting report of the conference and convention held at Timaru. The secretary, on behalf of the members, thanked Miss Robertson and hoped that on a future date she would pay another visit. It was decided to forward a letter of sympathy to Mrs Thompson in connection with the illness of her son.
