SOUTH INVERCARGILL
MEETING OF BOROUGH COUNCIL. A meeting of the South Invercargill Borough Council was held last evening when his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. McChesney) presided over an attendance of Councillors T. W. Richards, A. V. Hope and C. M. Dickson. The foreman reported that road surfacing had been carried out on McQuarrie, Bain, Scott and Stirratt streets and on Bluff and Elies roads. One truck of gravel was spread on Oreti street as directed and about 286 tons of gravel was spread on the roads mentioned. The inspector of nuisances reported: “I have not had a great deal of trouble with wandering stock on the reads. I have had only a few to deal with. The dog tax collecting is about finished.” The sanitary inspector reported: “Nothing of outstanding note was reported during the month. Two cases of scarelt fever were notified from one household. The patients were removed to hospital and the premises disinfected. No actual source of infection could be traced, and no further cases have developed.” The chief engineer of the Southland Electric Power Board wrote stating that the board would shift the electric light pble at the corner of Elies road and Stirrat street if the council would bear the cost, a"nroximately 10/-. The Mayor said that the foreman had informed him that the pole was on the edge of the footpath and if it was shifted back it would be on the footpath. The Town Clerk (Mr E. Smith) suggested that the pole should be shifted a few yards away from the corner. The foreman had suggested building up the corner with gravel. The council decided to instruct the foreman to fill the corner in with spoil. The Town Clerk, Invercargill, wrote regarding the domain adjoining the South Invercargill Town Hall. His council was prepared to make application to the Lands Department to have the control of the domain vested in it and the writer asked if the South Invercargill Council would object to such an application being made. The Mayor said that the position was that the Invercargill City Council was prepared to take over the domain. The Town Clerk said that the tennis club had an asset in the domain. Councillor Hope said that those concerned should have attended the meeting. They had not shown any interest in the domain, and they could not expect the council to do their work for them. The Mayor said he felt that a local domain board would be better, but if the interested parties would not come forward it might be as well to let the City Council take it over. It was only a matter of time when the place would be in'the city and that was the probable reason for their offer. He suggested that the matter should be held over for a month, and Councillor Hope moved accordingly, Councillor Richards seconded the motion and it was carried. Mr T. W. Richards wrote applying for permission to erect a petrol pump and to instal a petrol tank on his property at the corner of Scott street and Boundary road. The Mayor reported that the pump and tank had been removed from its original position on to Mr Richards’s own property. The permission was granted. The Town Clerk, Invercargill, wrote in re"’-" to the request for the erection of a lamp on the first pole beyond the Kew Hospital. The letter stated that the light would be in the Electric Power Board’s area and the board was not prepared to grant the council permission to erect a light there.
