GORE’S WATER SUPPLY
CHLORINATION PLANT.
PARTIALLY INSTALLED.
The installation of the chlorination system recently decided upon by the Gore Borough Council in connection with its town water supply is nearing completion, and is already in operation so far as one of the wells is concerned. It is anticipated that the system will be installed in the remaining well within the next two or three days. The system, which has been installed by Candy Filter’s, Ltd., at a cost of approximately £1,200, is a simple one to operate and the chlorination is carried out in such a way that the chlorine comes into contact with every drop of' water pumped. The plant is a most up-to-date one and provides a system’ of distribution of chlorine gas in liquid form so as to supply just sufficient to properly chlorinate the water pumped. It also provides, by means of dividing boxes, for separate distribution of the chlorine in proportion to the amount of water pumped into each well. The contact cylinders, into which all the water is pumped before passing thrGugh the mains, are designed to give a contact period of 20 minutes, thus assuring that effective chlorination takes place before the water reaches the consumer.
When chlorination of the town water supply was first suggested a number of people expressed the opinion that the taste of chlorine would be noticeable, but the fact that one pound of chlorine is sufficient to chlorinate 100,000 gallons indicates that consumers will notice little if any difference in the water. The chlorinated water has already been used by a number of householders, and so far as. is known they have been unaware of any change.
