POST AND TELEGRAPH

AUTOMATIC DISMISSAL OF CASUAL WORKERS.

STRONG PROTESTS.

(Per United Press Association.)

Auckland, May 23.

Strong exception was taken in Auckland to the Post and Telegraph Department’s circular instructing the automatic dismissal of casual workers if absent from work for any cause. Mr M. J. Savage M.P., declared that whoever was responsible for the circular was not fit for his position. The Re”. J. Calder, social worker, said that the circular was iniquitous and public opinion would never permit it. Mr Allum, chairman of the Transport Board, said that the Department's action was far from humane, especially when other work was so scarce.
