GAOL FOR FRAUD

VALUELESS CHEQUES ISSUED. “A RANK IMPOSTER.” (Per United Press Association.) Dunedin, May 23. Described as a “rank impostor” by the police, Henry Weyland Martin Powell on several charges of fraud by means of valueless cheques was sentenced on two charges to six months’ imprisonment, the terms to be cumulative. The police stated that accused was apparently a man who had had a good education in England, and by that means imposed on professional and business men and stayed at the best hotels. He was employed on a sheep station at Albury (South Canterbury) and at Napier in 1928 was sentenced to nine months’ imprisonment. On that occasion he became associated with wellknown Hawkes Bay residents, and from a lady there received £2OO.
