“BORROWED” CAR

SMASH AND DOUBLE SOMERSAULT. DRIVER FATALLY INJURED. (Per. United Press Association.) Palmerston North, May 20. A report made to the police yesterday afternoon that a car had been taken from King street had an unexpected sequel last evening. At 9.30 the dead body, of a man was brought to the public hospital by an unknown motorist. Later it was discovered that he was William Stafford Anderson, whose passport indicated that he was an engineer from. Canada. He had met his death in a motor smash at Taonui Crossing, near Feilding. Apparently. deceased, who was calling himself Bryce, called at the Bunnythorpe Hotel in a car of the same description as the missing one (and to-day identified as the latter car), and offered to take two waitresses to Feilding, where they were going. They accepted, and, not knowing the road, the driver did not cross the railway line. He continued over a bad stretch, and .collided, with a boundary sign, the car somersaulting twice. The girls crawled clear, and found him lying on the road, severely hurt. Dazed, bruised, and cut they reached a nearby residence to secure help. Aleanwhile a motorist arrived, and, picking up the victim, conveyed him in an unconscious state to hospital, where he arrived beyond aid. The missing car was owned by Air G. S. Goldingham.
