COMPETITIONS
THE GORE SOCIETY.
YESTERDAY’S RESULTS.
The Gore Competitions Society’s thirteenth annual festival was brought to a close yesterday so far as the competitive classes were concerned and throughout the judges of the various sections have been more than pleased with the high standard of the work given by competitors. The musical judge, Mr W. H. Dixon, L.R.A.M., A.R.C.M., who returns north to-day, stated at the close of last evening’s session that it had given him a great deal of pleasure to adjudicate as the musical sections had been equally as good as any he had heard at much larger festivals. Another pleasing feature of the festival has been the continued support given to it by the local public and provided that the attendance at the two demonstration concerts is as good as is anticipated, the society will come through with a credit balance.
Last night’s session was a most enjoyable one and special interest was given to it by a short address given by Mr Dixon on the origin of the Negro Spirituals. Mr Dixon illustrated his address by singing three of these popular melodies, and he was accorded a most enthusiastic reception from the audience for his pleasing interpretation of these songs. The special sections were also completed last evening and these items were also exceedingly popular. To-night the first of the demonstration concerts will be given and a most attractive programme has been arranged. This will include an item by the elocutionary judge, Mrs Culford Bell, who will give a French-Canadian poem, “Leetle Batuse,” by Dr Henry Drummond. Those who have previously had the privilege of hearing Mrs Bell will be glad of this further opportunity of hearing her. Already the bookings for this concert have been very heavy, and those desiring seats for either the first or second demonstration concerts should not delay.
