Mr William Stevenson travelled north by last eveniug’s express. Mr A. Wachner left Invercargill by the express last evening. Mr H. C. Govan was a passenger on the outward bound express last evening. Constable H. J. Mulholland, who was recently appointed to the Gore police force, commenced duties yesterday. Mr T. A. Wallace went north by last evening’s express to attend a conference of flour mjllers in Christchurch. Mr E. L. Macassey, of Dunedin, is expected to arrive in Invercargill by the first express to-day. He will stay at the Grand Hotel.
Mr and Mrs Hugh Smith, McNab, leave Gore on Thursday for Wellington en route to the Old Country where they trill spend an extended holiday.
Mr C. Green, the well-known railway guard on the Waikaka and Waimea branch lines, retires from the railway service on Saturday next after 40 years’ service. During that period Mr Green has been a resident of Waikaka for 21 years. Major Beasy, divisional commander of the Salvation Army for two years in Dunedin, left yesterday morning to take charge of the Central North division. His successor in Otago is Major Bear, of Christchurch, who some years ago was divisional secretary at Dunedin.
Messrs R. Bird, J. H. Geddes, H. McKenzie and G. Purdue, Southland Rugby players taking part in the South Island trial match at Christchurch to-day, departed from Invercargill by yesterday morning’s express. Messrs G. Porter and A. W. Holden were to join the party at Dunedin, while Mr W. E. Hazlett journeyed to Christchurch on Sunday evening. Mr A. J. Geddes, a New Zealand selector, left for Christchurch by last evening’s express.
At the annual dog trials at Gore yesterday the president (Mr J. S. Waddell) made reference to the death at Timaru of Mr J. P. Mclntyre and a minute’s silence was observed as a mark of respect to the deceased. The late Mr Mclntyre was a member and strong supporter of the club and for many years was a successful competitor. He always did his best to further the interests of the club. The late Mr Mclntyre was one of the pioneer settlers of the district and for many years resided at Maitland.
