MATAURA NEWS

FARMERS’ UNION. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura branch of the New Zealand Farmer’s Union was held on Saturday. Mr A. M. Robertson (president), presided over a fair attendance. The delegate to the Southland executive meeting (Mr T. Major), reported on. matters transacted at the monthly meeting of the executive. The matter of the IVoprietary Articles Trades Association had been taken up by the Dominion Executive, and it was resolved to wait and see what it was doing in the matter. The Dominion Executive was also talcing up the matter of six important questions affecting farmers, and also the matter of a delegate attending the Arbitration Court at Wellington in connection with the cost of production on sheep farms. The working of tho Arbitration Court and its effects on farmers were discussed, and it was resolved that the Arbitration Court is not in the interests of farmers. Another matter discussed was that of Customs taxation, which was held over till a future date. A number of other matters of interest to the fanner were dealt with. ANGLING CLUB. The committee of tho Mataura Anglers’ Club met on Monday, the president (Mr James Calder), presiding over a good attendance of members. A letter was received from the Southland Anglers’ Chib stating that a meeting of delegates from Gore, Mataura, Wyndham and Invercargill was fixed for Invercargill on Thursday, to arrange matters in connection with the quadruple competition. It was decided to hold open and novice competitions on Saturday from 1 pjn., and also a school boys’ competition. The matter of leaving gates open on the east side of the Mataura River on the properties along the Wyndham road was brought up, and it was decided to ask anglers to see that all gates on the river bank are closed after passing through, so that stock may not stray from one property to another. Since the Freezing Works opened, a large number of eels, ranging up to 181 b have been caught in the river in the vicinity of the falls, and it was decided to write to the Otago Society inquiring if the medal promised last year stiff holds good for an eeling competition.
