MATAURA BOROUGH

• MEETING OF COUNCIL. (From Our Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Mataura Borough Council was held on Tuesday, there being present his Worship the Mayor (Mr C. D. McConnell) and Councillors Mitchell, Reid, Walker, Clark, Ingram, Rowe, Aitken and Thorn. An apology was received from Cr. Mac Gibbon. CORRESPONDENCE. W. F. de Roo, Inspector of Health, forwarded a letter in connection with unregistered plumbers doing sanitary plumbing work. The licensing of plumbers rested with the council. Mr de Roo attended the meeting to place the facts before the council. It was resolved that the matter be referred to the Sanitation and Drainage Committee to report to next meeting. The secretary, Municipal Association of New Zealand, drew attention to an alteration in the date of the Municipal Conference from February 16 to February 9. Received. Mrs Mary Coats applied for and was granted a license for a boarding house on the usual conditions. D. M. Thomson applied for an auctioneer’s license, which was granted for six months. W. Heslin applied for a sanitary connection, which was referred to the Sanitation Committee for a report. E. Proctor applied for a sanitary plumber’s license, which was granted. REPORTS. The Works Committee recommended that Denbigh street from Bridge street northward on the west side of the street, be selected as a parking place for motor cars, a sign board to this effect to be erected at the corner of Bridge street and Denbigh street. That the Fire Brigade be supplied with a valve-key as requested by its secretary. The committee reported that the matter of buying a lawnmower for the Domain Grounds was being proceeded with. With the exception of the clause referring to the parking place the report was adopted. It was considered that one parking place was not sufficient, and it was resolved that the clause be referred back to the committee to recommend other places. The Sanitation and Water Committee recommended that the following water applications be granted:—T. McGillivray, Wyndham Road; Mrs Reid, End street; W. Heslin, Kana street; A F. Nixon, Gore road. The committee reported that the engineer had sanctioned a water connection to E. J. Murphy’s property on the -east side of the reservoir, and the connection had been made.—The report was adopted. 'The Finance Committee recommended that accounts amounting to £239 10/1 be passed for payment. That the 12 applications for light and power be granted. A report from the chief electrical engineer, Public Works Department, on various matters requiring to be attended to on the Borough electric, lines, was received, and it was recommended that the work be proceeded with when convenient. The report was adopted. GENERAL. Cr. Mitchell brought up the matter of blowing off the water in the dead ends of the water supply. He thought the work should be done, and an estimate of the cost procured. He moved that the engineer be asked to supply a report on the best method of cleansing the dead ends. The motion was seconded by Cr Clark and carried. Cr. Mitchell referred to the state of some of the streets where weeds and rubbish were accumulating, and also overhanging hedges. The surfaceman’s attention to be drawn to the matter. Cr Aitken referred to the matter of sending a delegate to the Municipal Conference at Palmerston North. Cr Clark moved that a delegate be sent and that the expenses be limited to £2O. This was seconded by Cr Aitken. After the matter was fully discussed, the motion was put to the meeting. Crs. Aitken, Rowe, Clark and Walker voted for the motion, and Crs Thom, Mitchell, Reid and Ingram voted against it. Tho motion was lost on the casting vote of the Mayor. Reference was made by Cr Ingram to a bad hole at the comer of Crawford Road, which was noted. The matter of the electors* roll was brought up by Cr Ingram. The roll closes at the end of the month, and he moved i hat Crs Aitken and Mac Gibbon be appointed to go into the question with the Town Clerk. The Mayor referred to the matter of drainage, and thought that it would be wise to ask the engineer to prepare a plan and estimate of draining the undrained portions of the town. The engineer was instructed to prepare a plan and estimate free of charge. It was resolved to request the engineer to report on the matter.
