BLUEBERRIES
SOIL REQUIREMENTS NECESSARY
SEVERE WINTER SEASON REQUIRED.
(Per United Press Association. )
Palmerston North, January 18. In connection with the rejxirt from Christchurch that the first blueberries grown in Canterbury were picked last. Friday, the trees having originally been brought from America by Dr. Tillyard and distrih at Belfast, Lower Hutt, Invercargill : Imerston North, inquiries made eliv.i. the information that the local tree is not doing well owing to unfavourable soil. Mr P. Black, curator of the Municipal reserves, in whose garden the tree was planted says that the blueberry favours a sandy and peaty soil and needs plenty of water, also must be planted adjacent to one of its kind. The blueberry needs a cold winter, and ought to do well if grown in the National Park, otherwise the tree will not bear prolifically. If grown by itself, it will produce about half a dozen of the fruit.
