DISASTROUS FIRE

SALVATION ARMY’ HOME GUTTED.

ONLY WALLS LEFT STANDING

(Per United Press Association.)

Auckland, January 18. The main building of the Salvation Army Industrial Home at One Tree Hill, providing accommodation for 40 men, was gutted by fire this afternoon. The fire broke out in a lean-to kitchen at the back of the premises soon after the • chimneys had been swept. The building, which was an old wooden 1 one, of two storeys with 10 rooms, including a dormitory with 17 beds, burned fiercely. The hydrants in the district are not of standard size and this limited the number of leads of hose available. The interior was gutted but the walls remained standing. All the furniture and bedding was lost. The building was insured.
