LORD .AND LADY BEARSTED.
(Rec. 7.20 p.m.) London, January 17. Obituary: Lord and Lady Bearsted. The couple had been ailing for many months. Lady Bearsted died last evening, and her husband to-day.—A. and N.Z.
Lord Bearsted was born in 1853 and educated privately. In 1881 he married Fanny Elizabeth, oldest daughter of the late Benjamin Benjamin. He travelled widely in the Far East and Japan, introduced the transport of petroleum in bulk through the Suez Canal, and was knighted for services rendered to HALS. Victorious in 1898. He was Aiderman of the City of London from 1891 till 1902; Jxmd Mayor of London from 1902 to 1903, and Sheriff from 1894 till 1895. He developed large oilfields in the Far East and received an official vote of thanks from the Lord Commissioner of the Admiralty in May 1915, for “services of the utmost importance to the fighting forces at the present time.” A Peerage was bestowed for eminent public and national services. He was a Commander of the Order of Leopold of Belgium; Grand Officer of the Legion of Honour, Knight Commander of the Order of the Rising Sun, Japan, and second class Sacred Treasure, Japan.
