OBITUARY

MRS D. J SERVICE. Tlie death of Mrs D. J. Service at the advanced age of 89 years removes yet another of the pioneers of the province, and one who lived practically the whole of her life in Invercargill. Of an extremely kind and generous disposition the late Mrs Service endeared herself to all who were privileged to enjoy her friendship. During the last twelve months die did not enjoy the best of health, but prior to that she was able to recall with wonderful clearness and accuracy the important events in the history of Invercargill, and nothing delighted her more than to gather her family and friends around her and talk of the olden times. The late Mrs Service was born in a small village near Ipswich in the year 1838, but it was not till 37 years later that she emigrated to New Zealand on board the Adamant. After a somewhat adventurous voyage, during which the ship was stranded on the coast, of Brazil, when the captain died and the crew mutinied against the first officer, she arrived at Bluff and journeyed through to Invercargill, where she had lived ever since. Deceased leaves a family of five to mourn their loss, Mrs S. J. Perry. Gladstone, and Messrs J. Service (Edendale), E. C. Service (Dunedin) and A. J. Service and W. A. Service, both of Invercargill. There are 22 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
