CONCILIATION COUNCIL

MUSICIANS’ DISPUTE. The Conciliation Commissioner, Mr W. H. Ilagger, was engaged yesterday in hearing the dispute between the Invercargill Musician:;’ Industrial Union of Workers and the Popular, Civic, and Greater Lyceum Picture Companies. Mrs Z. Walker, Miss C. Sheehan and Mr D. Boyd appeared for the Union, and Messrs C. S. l.onguet, A. B. Haggitt, A. C. Credginton and R. Breen (agent lor the Union) acted as assessors. After a silting which lasted all day a partial agreement was reached, but several clauses affecting wages and other important matters were referred to the Arbitration Court. The following clauses were agreed to: — When three or more performers are employed, the conductor or conductor leader shall be paid 10s a week above ordinary rates. Where a library is provided by a Sdngle- | handed performer, a sum of not less than than 4s per week shall be allowed. Where an orchestra is engaged not less than 8s shall be allowed. Casual performers, not otherwise provided for, shall not be paid less than 12s 6d for each performance. No substitute will be deemed a casual. A player will be deemed a casual if not employed for a period of not. less than six consecutive nights. One rehearsal per week of two hours shall be given by performers without charge, any extra time to be paid for at overtime rates. The following clauses relate to performers playing at dance assemblies and balls; —■ From S p.m, to 11 p.m., pianist only, 20s, all extra performers 15s each. From 8 to 12, pianist only, 255, all extra players 20s each. Long nights in connection with regular weekly dances 5s per hour after midnight, casuals 7s 6d. All casual engagements not otherwise mentioned, not exceeding two hours, to be 15s all time exceeding two hours to be at the rate of 7s Cd per hour. A week’s notice on either side shall be required to terminate any engagement.
