OFFICERS’ INSTITUTE’S DEMANDS. (Special to the Times). WELLINGTON, June 25. It is understood that as a result of a conference between throe members of (he -Railway Department. appointed by the Government, and three representatives of the Railway Officers’ Institute, lasting over eight days, a settlement of the majorit}' of the matters in dispute between the Railway Department anti the Institute has been arrived at. From what can he gathered the Institute expresses itself as fairly well satisfied with the agreement come to in regard to salaries. The increase in salaries it is understood, will be by way of bonus. Casual clerical employees and the officers of the Lake Wakatipu service will participate in the bonur. ■ The railway officers are not satisfied with the agreement come to in respect of hours of duty, although an improvement has been effected. An improvement in the rate of pay for Sunday duty, and also m the conditions regarding booking off and on duty on Sundays has been agreed to, and the conditions governing annual leave will in future be more favourable to the officers of the Institute than in the past. The agreement arrived at by the conference is not final. It will have to be ratified by a majority of the members of the Institute, and a ballot for this purpose will be taken in the course of a few days. Mr George Elliott, of Auckland, was the chairman at the conference. The Department /Was represented by Messrs A. W. Mowat, G. McCartney, and J. Mason; and the Institute by Messrs M. Dennchy (Wellington), J. R. Robertson (Wellington), and V. R. Stanley (Palmerston North).
