OBITUARY

DR AGNES BAIRD. Dr Agnes Baird, third daughter of the Rev. James Baird, Invercargill, died at Wyndham yesterday at the residence of her brother, Dr J. H. Baird. Dr Baird had been in bad health for a number of years. About eight weeks ago she left Invercargill on a visit, during which she became seriously ill and was unable to return home. Dr Baird was born at Hampden, and, when she was quite young, her people removed to Winton. At the local school she gained a junior scholarship, and, taking advantage of this, she attended the Southland Girls’ High School. Subsequently she spent some time at the Normal Training College (Dunedin). She decided to continue her studies in Britain, and she attended the Glasgow University for some time. There, besides her M.B. and Cb. B. degrees she graduated M.A. Returning to New Zealand she began to practise in Invercargill and for six or seven years she remained here. However, ill health intervened, and for the past few years she had to spend a great deal of time in the higher country. Dr Baird haa one sister and three brothers, all medical practitioners. Besides Dr J. H. Baird, there arc Dr W. S. Baird, now of Wanganui, Dr Bruce Baird, at present in the North Island, and Dr Cowie, who practise* in conjunction with her husband at Masterton.
