SUNDAY CONCERTS.
To the Editor. Sir, —I sincerely trust your warm yet temperate advocacy of the right to open the theatre on Sunday nights at an earlier hour than at present permitted, may induce our council to alter their present decision in the matter. “Disgusted Bandsman’s” letter, as a whole, appears worthy of general endorsement, but there is one insinuation that, surely, in calmer moments, he will retract —it is that 8 o’clock as opening hour, was made to suit the Minister’s Association. Now, sir, I cannot for one moment, conceive of that Association interfering in this matter. It is to the reverend gentlemen of that body we look for our leaders in brotherly citizenship and they, therefore, to my mind, would be the last in the world to do anything that would curtail the public’s innocent and instructive amusement. Should the council not consent to opening the theatre at 7.45, as you propose, may 1 venture this as an alternative —to prevent churchgoers suffering disadvantage in securing good seats, as endured under present arrangements, I would suggest that evening church services be curtailed by ten minutes or so. Were this view adopted and properly laid before the ministers and church authorities I feel certain it would be met in a proper spirit and all difficulty overcome.—l am, etc., CHURCH-AND-CONCERT-GOER.
