BAND CONCERTS.
To the Editor. Sir, —T wish to offer you my sincere thanks for your sub-leader of yesterday morning on the above subject. It is to be hoped the City Council will give heed to your very sound advice. • Bm a na *' ve Wellington and until eighteen months ago had lived in that city all my life and so know something about the Sunday evening concerts and the way the Council support their bands and orchestra. Certainly it is a fact that all through the winter months there is at least one and sometimes two concerts each Sunday evening. These concerts, which are very largely attended, commence at 8.15 p.m. and the City Council allows the doors to open one hour before the performance is timed to commence, namely 7.15 p.m.. Since I came to Invercargill 1 have been amazed at not only the lack of interest and want of support on the part of our Mayor and Council in matters musical, but at the obstacles placed in the way of our bands’ and orchestras’ progress. When I arrived here I learned that the motto or watchword of the district was “Advance Southland,” which I take it applies not only to business but to every phase of our life. Let us see to it that the most divine of all the arts receives from us all that measure of support which is its due. We here are not fortunate enough to possess a city organ and so the bands, etc., have to provide the whole of the people’s music and I feel sure the public are ready and willing to give their support if our city Fathers will only play the game. Thanking you for your valuable space.—l am, etc., MUSICIAN.
