SMALLPOX
EPIDEMIC IN OTAGO AND SOUTHLAND. FRESH CASES. (Per United Press .Association.) DUNEDIN, June 21. Two fresh cases of American smallpox were notified to-day to the Health Oihcer for Otago and Southland, making a total to dale since the outbreak was noted of 01, viz., 2!) in Southland and 22 in Otago, The total number of cases- under treatment in Dunedin is eleven and fifteen in Southland. The Health Officer advises vaccination and many school children are being vaccinated. NO NEW CASES IN SOUTHLAND. There were no cases of smallpox reported over the week-end and all the patients nt Kew are reported to be making good progress. The local Health Oilicer has received photographs showing the ravages of the disease on the face and body of the worst case in Dunedin. One photograph depicts a face so covered by scabs as to be repulsive, and others show a body sadly pock marked. This patient, whose ease was the wor.-t of any in Otago and Southland, is now recovering, although he will no doubt remain marked for the rest of his life.
