THE OPAWA'S MISHAP
RUMOURS SET AT REST. CAPTAIN PRAISES PILOT’S WORK. •When the Opawa was leaving Bluff on Monday night she met with a slight mishap and anchored off Dog Island. ' All sorts of rumours began to circulate as to the cause of her halt, and it was stated that she had touched the bank in the harbour. Captain G. N. Lindsay, the harbourmaster at Bluff took the vessel out, and he has stated that the cause of the trouble was the jamming of the Opawa’s steering gear just as she was passing the old lightship. He had to steer the vessel with the aid of the tug and by making use of the Opawa’s twin screws. By this means he was able to take the Home line rout by the usual track, and he says that he was never near the bank. The excellent work done by the harbourmaster has been acknowledged by Captain H. L. Upton, of (he Opawa, in the following letter:— Dear Captain Lindsay,— I wish to thank you for the way you handled the above shin under my command when the steering jammed, between the lightship and channel rocks, and the way you manoeuvred her to an anchorage off Dog Island. It was certainly a magnificent bit of seamanship.—Yours sincerely, (Signed) H. L. UPTON.
