THE LINER WESTMEATH

FIRE IN A HOLD. THE OUTBREAK EXTINGUISHED. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 19. The Federal Shire liner Westmeath arrived from Liverpool via Panama this morning. On May 28, about 9.30 a.m., smoke appeared from the ventilators in No. 4 hold and fire was located in the ’tween decks, the smoke penetrating the freezing engine room and bunkers, deck and combings. The fore-part of No. 4 hold started to crackle and the captain had acids and other dangerous cargo in the vicinity jettisoned. The vessel was put head to wind and two hoses extinguished the fire, which shortly after midnight was well in hand. The captain estimates that the damage to the ship and cargo is small, but until the cargo in No. 4 hold is discharged it will be impossible to make a reliable statement.
