CARGO PILLAGING

DUNEDIN CONSIGNEES ROBBED. HEAVY LOSSES ON THE OPAWA SHIPMENT. (Per United Press Association.) DUNEDIN, June 17. A further example of cargo-pillaging was reported to-day. The steamer Opawa discharged a large consignment of Liverpool cargo at Dunedin about three weeks ago, and almost every local firm to whom goods were consigned suffered considerably as a result of pillaging. The loss of goods represents about £1 per ton of the total amount of cargo landed in Dunedin from this steamer. The agents received one claim for £406, another for £230, and a large number for smaller amounts. It is presumed that the goods were stolen before the vessel left England.
