LIGHT RAILWAYS

QUESTION OF GAUGE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 17. A motion adverse to the agitation for narrowing the gauge in connection with the proposed light raihvays was carried by the council of the Auckland Railways League to-day. The text of the motion was as follows: “ That the council of the Auckland Railways and Development League views with grave concern the agitation to obtain a change of gauge under the Private Railways Construction Act, and strongly deprecates any intention on the part of the Government to allow the construction of a light railway line with a gauge of two feet if it is for the carriage of passengers as well as for freight, as not allowing the margin of safety that is so requisite to all railway lines. The is willing to support light railways so long as they are of standard gauge.”
