GOOD ISLANDS
ADDITION TO SCHOOL EQUIP- . MENT. PARLIAMENTARIANS’ GIFT. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, June 17. During the visit of members of Parliament to the Cook Islands at the time of the Samoan trip more *. than passing interest was taken in the schools in the group, and the work each was doing. It was found that at some of the schools visited, particularly at Mangaia, a much, needed equipment was an organ or a piano to assist the children in their singing and in concerts held. Members considered that the praiseworthy efforts of the teachers to make the pupils proficient in all directions deserved recognition and they appointed a committee, consisting of the Hon. Sir Heaton Rhodes, the Hon. W. H. Triggs and Mr L. M. Isitt to collect funds towards the cost of purchasing an organ and other other special equipment for Mangaia and other Cook Island schools. The sum of £57 was raised on the Mokoia, whicii amount was hardly sufficient for the purpose to which it was to be devoted. The question of the Government subsidising the fund was deferred for the consideration of Cabinet. The Hon. E. P. Lee, Minister* for Internal Affairs, states that Cabinet has decided that a sum equal to the amount of the members’ donations shall be granted and thus the Government will enable the object which the members had in view to be achieved.
