PAPER MANUFACTURE

A WEST COAST PROPOSAL. REPRESENTATIONS TO MEMBERS. (Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH, June 17. One of the matters brought to the notice of the Parliamentary party this morning was the question of the advisability of making paper from wood pulp in this district. Mr J. D. Lynch, president of the Chamber of Commerce, pointed out that large areas of timber were available from Otira downwards towards the coast. It was quite unsuitable for commercial milling timber, but was suitable for paper making, and be urged that the time was opportune for practical steps to be taken to provide the necessary plant for making pulp for conversion into paper, particularly in view of the shortage of paper. A number of years ago areas were taken up with this object in view, but‘so little encouragement was given in the dominion that practically nothing further was done. Conditions had materially altered since,’so much so that what at one time might have been speculative was now a sure industry. He suggested that the Government should assist, cither directly or by subsidising private enterprise, lie estimated the capital necessary at £250,000, but that was a small sum compared with what the dominion had to pay to outside suppliers for paper. He was glad that Sir George Fenwick had taken the matter up.
