NEW COAL MINE

DOBSON WORKINGS OPENED. A PROFIT SHARING ENTERPRISE. (Per United Press Association.) GREYMOUTH. June 17. Yesterday the visiting members of Parliament att faded the official opening of a new coal mine at Dobson, which is being developed by Mr J. D. Lynch. Dobson is prettily situated about five miles from Grcymouth, alongside the main railway line, within the borough of Brunner, and promises idea! surface conditions for the industrial population. The visitors were welcomed by the Mayor, Mr Williams, and the Brunner councillors and a large attendance of visitors. Speeches were delivered by the Mayor and others, showing the importance of the occasion. The machinery was set going and the mint; formally opened by Mr Lynch, who explained that the coal seam was 12ft. Gin. thick and had been proved to a distance of 580 feet. Two other favourable bores had beer. sunk. He hoped before many months, with the co-operation of the men, to produce coal in huge quantities, and ultimately prove Dobson coal to be one of the biggest ami best if not the best in the dominion. Mr Lynch explained the provision made by his company to share the profits after providing for interest on capital. The employees would have direct representation in .the control of the company’s affars. The Dobson Miners’ Union would be asked to accept some paid-up shares and elect, one of their members to a scat on the Board, so that he might have the fullest inside knowledge of the company’s affairs. It was also intended out of the assured profits to allocate a portion towards scholarships and the educational requirements of the employees’ children. Altogether the day was a red letter day for Dobson and the Brunner district, which has a material advantage over many other coalfields through being so near the port am; railway.
