Sir Auckland Gerldes, speaking at Princeton University commemoration, said the greatest calamity which could befall the world was a rift between the Englishspeaking peoples. Civilisation then would be destroyed. The future of the world really depended upon a free interchange of thought and a frank understanding between English and American university men. lie continued: "I believe the world war was really inevitable because of the economic position of Europe, but out of the turmoil will evolve a saner and nobler civilisation.”
