UNREST IN INDIA
THE BOLSHEVIST MENACE. STATEMENT BY THE INDIA OFFICE. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Renter’s Telegrams.) LONDON, June 15. The India Office declares that the Bolshevists are doing their utmost to stir up trouble in India. Their agents are active throughout the East Central provinces, and the feeling of uiwettlement affords a congenial atmosphere for propaganda. It is well-known there exists in Moscow a special department for the direction of Bolshevist activities in the East whenever possible. The native population are incited against the Western Government. Britain is held up as a particular enemy. The Indian Government is fully aware of these efforts and is actively engaged in counter-measures. It cannot be said that there is no menace to India. The fact is, however, that it is by no means as great as it was. The Indian Government is satisfied that if Bolshevism in India has nnt been killed it has been scotched, and that the position colls not for alarmist measures, but for a continuation of firm, wise and sympathetic rule. APPROACHING ROYAL VISIT. EXTREMIST POLITICIANS’ THREAT. DELHI. June 16. (Received June 18, 12.20 a.m.) An attempt is being made in India to prevent the Prince of Wales from visiting this country at the end of the present year. Extremist politicians who regard the Hunter Commission’s findings with disfavour, and strongly urge modification of the Turkish peace terms, threaten that unless their de mam's are granted they will make the visit of the Prince a fiasco. The Indian Home Rule League cabled to the Secretary of State that a welcome to the I’rince was doubtful unless the present situation were relieved.
