At the request of the members of th« South School Committee, Mr C. S. Longuet has agreed to accept nomination as a member of the Southland Education Board. Mr H. E. Edmond was last night appointed to a cjprkahip in the electricity department of the corporation. There were a number of applicants. A London Press Association cable states that the King at Buckingham Palace invested Sir lan Hamilton with the Grand Cross of St. Michael and St. George. The Belgian Croix de Guerre awarded to Corporal A, R. Cox, of Fairlight, has been forwarded to him by post as he was unable to he present to have the medal presented by H.R.H. the Prince of Wales. St, Paul’s Presbyterian Church, Wanganui, has extended a unanimous call to the Rev. Evan R. Harris, of Chalmers Church, Timani, says a Press Association telegram. Mr Toni Pollard, who is so well known in the theatrical world of New Zealand, is at present on a visit to Invercargill after an absence of many years. He has been I engaged in producing the “Country Girl” in Dunedin. A Blenheim Press Association telegram states that Dr T. Julian, jttnr., has been appointed resident surgeon at the Wairau Hos. pital. There were four applicants. Dr Julian had three and a half years’ war service, and was for twelve months house surgeon at the Dunedin Hospital. A London Press Association message states that Sir Thomas Mackenzie tendered a reception to Lord and Lady Jellicoe at the Hotel Victoria. There were no speeches. Three hundred guests were present, including Lord Desborough, Lord Clifford, Lord Islington, Lord Southwark, the Earl and Countess of Hardwicke, the Agents-General and High Commissioners, the Bishop of Auckland anil the Dean of Dunedin.
Sir William and Lady Birdwood had a quint send-off at the Invercargill railwaystation yesterday when they left for Queenstown by special train. The Mayor and councillors and prominent members of the R.S.A. and a number of others swelled the gathering to about 1(30 strong. The General spent smite time in conversation with numbers of those present and shook hands with most. On the call of the president of the R.S.A. (Mr D, M. Rael ringing cheers were given for the General, his wife and his daughter.
On Monday afternoon a special meeting of (he Moderator’s Committee of the Dunedin Presbytery was held to consider a call from St. Andrew’s Church to (he Rev. Hector Maclean, of Knox Church, Invercargill. The Rev. J. Kilpatrick presided. The call, which was signed by 328 members nut of an available total of 3i)o, and by 20 adherents, waa laid on (he table by Messrs W. Gow, J. A. Park, and J. G. Patterson, who intimated that the call was hearty ami unanimous. On the motion of the Rev. Dr Cameron it was decided to sustain the call and send it forward to the Southland Presbytery, and to ask the Revs. J. Collie and .1. L. Robinson to prosecute it before the Southland Presbytery. It wtis intimated that Messrs Gow, Park and Patterson wotdd also appear before the Presbytery in support of the call Reasons for the call were directed to be sent with it.
