Mr E. Stark, city electrical engineer of Christchurch, will be leaving this week for a trip to the United States. Major H. C. Nutsford has been appointed superintendent of the Veterans’ Home at Auckland. A Sydney Press Association message re* ports the death of Mr Harry Cox, a former New Zealand Rugby footballer. The Deputy Inspector of Prisons (Mr M. Hawkins I, arrived in Invercargill on Friday, and ia staying at the Grand Hotel. On the occasion of his 90th birthday, celebrated recently, the Rev. James Paterson was the recipient of hearty congratulations from the. Wellington Presbytery and many other friends. For many years he had charge of St. John’s Church, Wellington, and still holds the position of senior minister. He is enjoying very good health, and continues to do active ministerial work. Owing to the death of Mr George Hogben, M.A., formerly Director of Education, a vacancy was crested on the New Zealand Council of Education. The late Mr Hogben was one of the two representatives of technical and industrial interests appointed under the Act. The Minister for Education has the power of appointment and Mr J. H. Howell, B.Sc., Director of the Wellington Technical College, has been appointed by him to fill the vacancy. The staff and pupils of the Technical College gathered on Friday afternoon to take farewell of Miss Rena Simpson, who, having received an appointment on the teaching staff of the Wellington Technical College, left on Saturday. Many eulogistic remarks were made, and Miss Simpson was presented with an ivory-backed hair brush and hand mirror as a memento of her six years’ association with the college. Miss Simpson suitably replied. At night she was the guest of the Oid Students’ Association at a social evening, being presented with a handsome travelling rug. Miss Simpson has been an active member of the Association since its formation, holding several important positions on the executive.
